Corner of Van Ness and Geary. Mel's Diner is closed and Joyce is grumbling. A homeless woman approaches asking for change. Jesse smiles kindly. "Sorry, no money," he says.

"Woggin win omun woo," she says.

"What did she say?" he asks me.

"YOU'RE WALKING WITH AN OPEN WOUND," she says impatiently. "You ain't got no money. It's like an open wound."
